Out of the box, a Fire TV Stick 4K works well enough, but a handful of settings can noticeably improve how live TV looks and sounds. Getting your Fire TV Stick 4K settings right takes about ten minutes, and you only have to do it once.
This guide focuses on the options that matter most for IPTV viewers. If you have not installed your player app yet, start with our Fire TV Stick IPTV setup guide and come back here afterward. The same tips apply to any Fire TV Stick 4K setup, wherever you watch.
Before You Change Anything
A few basics need to be in place for 4K and HDR to work at all:
- Your TV must support 4K, and HDR if you want HDR.
- The stick should be plugged into an HDMI port that supports 4K and HDCP 2.2. On many TVs, only some ports do, so check the labels on the back or your TV manual.
- The channel or video itself must be in 4K. A 4K device cannot add detail that is not in the original stream.
- Your Fire TV software should be up to date. Check under Settings > My Fire TV > About.
Display Settings
All of the following are found under Settings > Display & Sounds > Display.
Video Resolution
Leave this on Auto in most cases. The stick detects the best resolution your TV supports. If you pick a manual setting the TV cannot show, the screen may go black for a few seconds before the stick switches back on its own.
Match Original Frame Rate
When available, this option lets the stick switch the TV to the frame rate of the video you are watching. It can make motion look smoother on content filmed at different frame rates. The trade-off is a brief black screen when a channel starts while the TV changes mode. Try it on and see whether you like the result.
Dynamic Range Settings
Choose Adaptive. This tells the stick to output HDR only when the content is actually HDR. The alternative, Always HDR, can make regular channels look washed out or too dark.
Audio Settings
Open Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio.
- Surround Sound: set to Best Available if you have a soundbar or AV receiver. If you only use the TV speakers, leaving it on Best Available is also fine.
- Dolby Digital Plus: Auto works for most setups. If audio drops out or you hear nothing through an older soundbar, try turning it off.
- Audio/Video Sync: if voices do not match lip movement, this option lets you adjust the timing, which is common when using an external speaker.
Settings That Keep the Stick Running Smoothly
Turn Off Featured Content Autoplay
Under Settings > Preferences > Featured Content, turn off video and audio autoplay. The home screen will stop playing trailers, which saves bandwidth and makes navigation feel quicker.
Free Up Storage
Check your free space under Settings > My Fire TV > About > Storage. If it is running low, go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications and uninstall anything you no longer use. You can also clear the cache for individual apps from the same menu.
Use HDMI-CEC
Under Settings > Display & Sounds, HDMI CEC Device Control lets the Fire TV remote turn your TV on and off and switch inputs automatically. It is a small convenience you will appreciate every day.
Restart Now and Then
Like any small computer, the stick benefits from a fresh start every so often. Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Restart, or hold the Select and Play/Pause buttons together for about five seconds. A weekly restart is a simple habit that keeps things responsive.
Network Tips for 4K Viewing
Higher resolutions need a faster and steadier connection. If your router supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, connect the stick to the 5 GHz network when the router is reasonably close. For the steadiest connection, an Ethernet adapter made for Fire TV lets you plug the stick into your router with a cable.
Troubleshooting
The 4K Option Is Missing
Try a different HDMI port and use the HDMI extender that came in the box. Also check your TV settings for an option often called HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color or Input Signal Plus, which may need to be enabled on the port you are using.
Colors Look Dull
Switch Dynamic Range Settings back to Adaptive and check that your TV picture mode is not set to an energy-saving option.
No Sound Through the Soundbar
Turn Dolby Digital Plus off, then set Surround Sound to Stereo and test again. If that works, switch the options back one at a time to find what your soundbar supports.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I always set the resolution to 4K manually?
No. Auto picks the best resolution your TV supports and avoids black screens if a setting is not compatible.
Does the Fire TV Stick 4K make every channel 4K?
No. It can only display 4K when the channel or video is in 4K. Other content is shown at its original quality.
Will these settings affect other apps?
Yes. Display and audio settings apply to the whole device, so other streaming apps benefit too.
Do I need to change these settings again after an update?
Usually not, but it is worth a quick check after a major Fire TV software update.
