The TV guide is the part of an IPTV app you will probably use the most. Instead of flipping through channels one by one, the IPTV EPG TV guide shows you what is playing now and what is coming up next across all your channels in a single grid. Once you know how it works, finding something to watch takes seconds.

This article explains what an EPG is, how to use it on a Fire Stick or Smart TV, and how to solve the most common guide problems, such as missing listings or times that look wrong.

What Is an EPG?

EPG stands for Electronic Program Guide. It is the on-screen schedule you may remember from cable or satellite boxes: a grid with channels down one side and time slots across the top. In an IPTV app, the guide data is downloaded from your service and matched to each channel, so you can see program names, start times and often a short description.

Every Aloha4K plan includes an EPG TV guide. When you log in with Xtream Codes, many player apps load the guide automatically along with your channels.

Opening the Guide

Where you find the guide depends on the app, but the general steps are similar:

  1. Open your player app and go to the Live TV section.
  2. Look for an option labeled TV Guide, EPG or Guide. In some apps, pressing left or the menu button while watching a channel brings it up.
  3. Use the arrow buttons to move between channels and time slots.
  4. Select a program that is airing now to start watching.

Building a Favorites List

Scrolling through a long list of channels gets old fast. A favorites list puts the channels you actually watch in one place.

  1. Highlight a channel in the channel list or guide.
  2. Press and hold the Select button, or open the options menu, depending on the app.
  3. Choose Add to Favorites.
  4. Repeat for your other regular channels, then open the Favorites group to see them together.

This is especially handy for sports. Our guide to watching live sports with IPTV explains how to use favorites and the guide to plan around game times.

Using Channel Groups

Channels are usually organized into groups or categories, such as news, sports, kids or a specific country. Choosing a group before opening the guide narrows the grid to just those channels, which makes the guide faster to browse on a TV remote.

Getting Around the Guide Faster

A full guide can feel overwhelming on a TV remote, especially if your channel list is long. These habits make it quicker to use:

  • Start from a group. Pick a category first so the guide only shows the channels you care about right now.
  • Jump instead of scrolling. Many apps let you skip a page at a time with the channel up and down buttons, or jump ahead by several hours.
  • Read the details. Highlighting a program usually shows a short description, which helps you tell similar shows or events apart.
  • Go back to now. If you have scrolled far ahead, look for a button or option that returns the guide to the current time.
  • Keep your favorites short. A list of ten or fifteen channels you really watch is more useful than a list of fifty.

Getting the Times Right

In the United States, programs are often listed in Eastern Time, but your guide should show them in your local time. Most apps use your device’s time zone, so it is important that the device itself is set correctly.

On a Fire TV Stick

Go to Settings > Preferences > Time Zone and make sure your local time zone is selected.

On a Smart TV

Look for Time or Date & Time in the General section of your TV settings, and enable automatic time if it is available.

Some player apps also have their own EPG time offset setting. If your device time is correct but the guide is still an hour or more off, check the app settings for an option to shift the guide time.

Troubleshooting Guide Problems

The Guide Is Empty

Guide data can take a little longer to load than the channel list. Wait a minute after logging in, then look for an option to refresh or update the EPG in the app settings. Restarting the app often helps too.

Some Channels Have No Listings

Not every channel has guide data available at all times. If a channel you watch often shows no information, let our support team know which one it is.

Listings Are Out of Date

Refresh the guide from the app settings. If your app lets you choose how often the guide updates, a daily update is a good choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to set up the EPG separately?

With an Xtream Codes login, many apps load the guide automatically. If yours does not, check the app settings for an EPG option or contact support.

Why is the guide showing the wrong time?

This is almost always a time zone setting on the device. Fix the device time zone first, then check the app for an EPG time offset.

Can I set reminders for shows?

Some player apps let you set reminders from the guide. Look for a reminder or record option when you highlight a future program.

Does the guide work the same on every device?

The idea is the same, but the layout depends on the app and device. Once you have used it on one, the others feel familiar.
