The Fire TV remote looks simple, but it hides a handful of shortcuts that make everyday viewing faster. If you watch IPTV on a Fire TV Stick, learning a few Fire TV Stick remote tips can save you a lot of scrolling, especially when your channel list is long or you are trying to reach a game before it starts.
This guide covers the buttons worth knowing, how to use voice search, how to turn your phone into a remote and what to do when the remote stops responding. The tips apply to Fire TV Stick models in the US and anywhere else.
The Buttons You Will Use Most
- Home: returns to the Fire TV home screen from anywhere.
- Back: goes back one screen. In most IPTV apps, it also closes the channel list or guide.
- Menu (three lines): opens extra options in many apps, such as adding a channel to favorites or changing settings.
- Select (center button): opens a channel, confirms a choice or shows the on-screen info while watching.
- Rewind, Play/Pause and Fast Forward: control playback for movies and series, where the app supports it.
Shortcuts Worth Learning
Hold Home for the Quick Menu
Pressing and holding the Home button opens a quick menu with shortcuts to your apps, settings and sleep mode. It is the fastest way to jump to your full app list and open your IPTV player.
Restart Without Unplugging
Hold the Select and Play/Pause buttons together for about five seconds to restart the Fire TV Stick. It is handy when an app feels slow and you do not want to reach behind the TV.
Put Your App Up Front
From your app list, highlight IBO Player Pro, press the Menu button and choose Move. Placing it at the front of your app row means you can open it with one or two clicks from the home screen.
Navigating Inside an IPTV App
Every app is a little different, but these habits work in most of them:
- Open a channel group first instead of scrolling through every channel.
- Use the TV guide to see what is on now across several channels at once.
- Add channels you watch often to your favorites, usually from the Menu button or by holding Select.
- Press Back once to return to the list you came from, rather than going all the way to the home screen.
- Look for a search option to jump straight to a channel, movie or series by name.
For more on favorites and channel groups, see our guide on how to use the IPTV EPG TV guide.
Using Voice Search
If your remote has a microphone button, you can hold it and speak to search or open apps. Saying the name of your player app is often quicker than finding it in the app list. Voice search works best for opening apps and Fire TV features; searching inside your IPTV app usually happens through the app’s own search.
Use Your Phone as a Remote
The free Amazon Fire TV app turns your phone into a remote. It connects over your home Wi-Fi and includes a keyboard, which is a big help when typing login details or searching for a title.
- Install the Amazon Fire TV app on your phone from your phone’s app store.
- Make sure your phone is on the same Wi-Fi network as the Fire TV Stick.
- Open the app and select your Fire TV Stick from the list.
- Enter the code shown on the TV to pair the two.
Control Your TV Volume and Power
Many Fire TV remotes include volume and power buttons for your TV or soundbar. If they do not work, open Settings and look for Equipment Control, where you can set up the remote to control your TV. Turning on HDMI CEC Device Control under Display & Sounds also lets the stick turn your TV on and switch inputs automatically.
Our Fire TV Stick 4K settings guide covers HDMI-CEC along with display and audio options.
Troubleshooting the Remote
The Remote Does Not Respond
Replace the batteries first, using fresh ones from the same pack. If that does not help, unplug the Fire TV Stick from power for about a minute, plug it back in and try again.
The Remote Has Lost Its Pairing
Hold the Home button for around ten seconds while standing close to the TV. This usually pairs the remote with the stick again. In the meantime, the Fire TV app on your phone can control the stick.
Volume Buttons Do Nothing
Run the Equipment Control setup again and choose your TV brand when asked. If you use a soundbar, set it up as well so the remote controls the right device.
Device setup steps for other platforms are on our installation page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the Fire TV app instead of the remote?
Yes. The Amazon Fire TV app works as a full remote with a keyboard, as long as your phone and the stick are on the same Wi-Fi network.
Why does the Menu button do different things?
The Menu button opens options for the app you are in, so what it shows depends on the app.
Can I buy a replacement remote?
Yes. Make sure the replacement is listed as compatible with your Fire TV Stick model before you buy it.
