If you share your TV with children, it makes sense to control what they can open. IPTV parental controls work on two levels: the device, which can lock apps behind a PIN, and the player app, which may offer its own locks for certain categories. Using both gives you the most control.
This guide shows how to set up parental controls on a Fire TV Stick and on Samsung and LG Smart TVs, plus a few habits that keep a family setup simple. The steps apply to households in the US and anywhere else.
Start with a Plan
Before you change any settings, decide what you want to achieve. Most families choose one of these approaches:
- Lock the player app entirely, so it needs a PIN to open.
- Leave the app open, but lock specific categories inside the app, if the app supports it.
- Combine both, for example a device PIN for the app plus category locks for extra peace of mind.
Choose a PIN that children are unlikely to guess, and avoid simple sequences or birth years.
It also helps to decide who in the household knows the PIN. Fewer people means fewer chances of it being shared, and it makes changing the PIN later much simpler.
Parental Controls on a Fire TV Stick
- Open Settings from the Fire TV home screen.
- Go to Preferences, then Parental Controls.
- Turn Parental Controls on. You will be asked to enter or create a PIN.
- Review the options and turn on PIN protection for app launches if you want apps to require the PIN.
Once app launches are protected, anyone opening your IPTV player app will need the PIN. You can turn the setting off at any time from the same menu.

Parental Controls on a Samsung Smart TV
Samsung TVs let you lock individual apps with a PIN:
- Press Home and go to Apps.
- Open the settings for your apps, usually a gear icon on the Apps screen.
- Select your IPTV player app and choose Lock.
- Enter the TV PIN when asked.
If you have never set a PIN on your Samsung TV, check your TV manual for the default PIN and change it to your own in the general or security settings. Menu names vary by model year.
Parental Controls on an LG Smart TV
- Press the Settings button on your remote and open All Settings.
- Look for a Safety or Parental Controls section, usually under General.
- Turn the feature on and set or enter a PIN.
- Choose Application Locks and select your IPTV player app.
As with Samsung, your TV manual lists the default PIN if one is set. Change it to a PIN only the adults in your home know.
Locks Inside the Player App
Many IPTV player apps include their own parental lock, which can hide or PIN-protect selected categories. Open the app settings and look for an option called Parental Control, Parental Lock or Lock Categories. The exact features depend on the app and its version.
Habits for a Family-Friendly Setup
- Build a favorites list of family channels so children can find them easily.
- Use channel groups in the TV guide to keep browsing focused. See our guide on how to use the IPTV EPG TV guide.
- Keep your login email private, so the app cannot be set up on another device without you.
- Check your settings again after major device or app updates.
Set Up a Kids’ Favorites List
Locks keep things out, but a good favorites list makes it easy for children to find what they are allowed to watch.
- Open your player app and browse the channel groups together with your child.
- Add the channels you are happy for them to watch to a favorites list.
- If your app supports several favorites lists, name one for the kids.
- Show them how to open the list from the remote.
- Review the list every few months as their interests change.
Troubleshooting Parental Controls
I Forgot My PIN
On a Fire TV Stick, the PIN is tied to your Amazon account, so you can reset it through your account. On a Smart TV, check your TV manual for how to reset the PIN, which may involve resetting some settings.
The App Still Opens Without a PIN
Confirm that the lock is turned on for that specific app, not just for purchases or other features. Restart the device after changing the setting.
The Lock Option Is Missing
Update your device software. Some older models have fewer parental control options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I lock only certain categories?
That depends on your player app. Many apps include a parental lock for categories in their settings.
Will a device PIN affect other apps?
It can. On a Fire TV Stick, protecting app launches applies to apps in general, so other apps may also ask for the PIN.
Is it better to lock the device or the app?
Using both gives the most control. A device lock stops the app from opening, while an app lock lets you control specific categories.
Do parental controls carry over to a new device?
No. Device PINs and app locks are set on each device, so set them up again whenever you add or replace a TV or streaming stick.
